so i’m in my dorm room at EMF.
i’m not sure what to think about this camp yet because i haven’t met enough people to make a fair judgment. here is what i can say so far:
1. my roommate is really cool, thankfully. i was so scared i would get someone weird, but i really like kimmi!
2. the other oboists (at least the ones that i’ve met) are awesome: nice, funny, and super helpful - especially with reeds!
3. i already feel more productive. the reed i made today came out good and i had some pretty sweet practicing.
4. my bed is going to kill me. it’s a loft bed, and the mattress is up several inches higher than my head. i’m terrified.
conclusion: if stravinsky’s “rite of spring” doesn’t kill me, my psychotically high bed certainly will.
one day left on long island.
and it’s all planned out for me beforehand:
1. wake up at 8:00 am. i need to be out of the house by 9:30 am at the very latest.
2. oboe lesson at 11 am in the city.
3. hopefully back home by 3 pm: freshen up, change clothes.
4. then i’m finally graduating high school.
my flight to north carolina leaves at 8:30 am on tuesday, so i’ll have to be out of the house at 5:30 am on tuesday to beat the traffic. i’ll land in greensboro at 10:17 am and hopefully be in my dorm room at eastern music festival by 11:30.

brothers by the black keys - it’s not my usual type of music but i love it. they’re so retro and interesting, like a more old-school MGMT. everyone should at least try to listen to them, especially to track #3 - “tighten up.”
my best friend is you by kate nash - she almost reminds me of an ingrid michaelson - regina spektor hybrid, but i think i might like her better than either one. she puts deep and honest lyrics to a pop beat, and her new album is a tribute to 60s-style british pop.

i never thought i would say this..
but i’m turning into one of those people that i made fun of in the beginning of the year. one of those “i’m really going to miss high school” people. don’t get me wrong - i really am ready to move on because it’s time to get out of massapequa for a little bit. however, in typical whale fashion, i have created a list of things that i am going to miss most about massapequa high school.
1. the music department: yeah, i’m majoring in music, and i’m sure the musicians at my school will be fabulously talented, but they’re not the same as the musicians here. i’m going to miss fighting with and getting reed water thrown at me by my stand partner; mr. stempel’s “ladies, gentlemen, and those who don’t know the difference” jokes; and the attitude of the wind ensemble, carefree but ready to play when it really counts.
2. my friends: there are so many cliches i could say about my friends. i’ll miss all of them for all of their various quirks, but honestly, i think what i’ll miss most is being called the whale.
3. the feeling of security: school gets boring, and waking up at 5:45 AM isn’t fun, but i would be lying if i said i didn’t take a certain comfort in having a daily routine where my day is scheduled and planned out. i’m going to miss having that sense of organization in my mess of a life.
4. knowing “it’s just high school”: it’s scary that the mistakes you make after graduation can actually count, and the people you meet in college will probably be your colleagues for the rest of your life. it’s a huge step.
there’s a lot more that i’m going to miss. expect more random posts from me as it gets closer to graduation. hopefully they don’t get too sappy but no promises. ):
